Nestorone gel is a clear contraceptive gel which contains bio-identical estrogen (estradiol) and a new synthetic progestin called Nestorone. The Population Research Council, NY and drug firm Antares Pharma, Inc developed it together, and it is currently undergoing further testing before being released to market.
How to Use Birth Control Gel
Apply the gel to the stomach, inner thighs, arms, or shoulders once a day for a slow release of estrogen and progesterone into the bloodstream. It uses an advanced transdermal delivery system (ATD), which means it dries quickly and leaves no residue on the skin. Because it is a gel, it also bypasses the liver so puts less strain on the digestive system. It is more reliable than transdermal contraceptive patches, which are visible and can fall off.
Phase Two Clinical Trials
Dr. Ruth Merkatz, Director of Clinical Development at the Population Council Research Centre, NY, presented the findings of a small study at the American Society for Reproductive Medicine. Researchers found that the gel was effective with less typical side effects that the oral contraceptive pill, which can cause weight gain and skin outbreaks.
